19th Sunday After Pentecost 2 Cor 11:31-12:9 Luke 6:31-36 In the Beatitudes, our Lord tells us, “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy”. And here, he says “Be merciful, just as the Father is merciful”. So, let’s look at it. How is the Father merciful? Often, when people talk about God in the Old Testament, the response is that he was a cruel God. A common example given is this command given in 1 Samuel. “Now go and smite Am′alek, and utterly destroy all that they have; do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.’” As one Christian apologist puts it, “The Amalekites were not nice people. God is Wondrous in His Saints

First Sunday after Pentecost - All Saints Heb 11:33-12:2 Matt 10:32-33,37-38;19:27-30 Did you know that each and every one of us is called to be a saint? It’s right there in the reading from Hebrews. After talking about all those Old Testament saints, the good they enjoyed and the difficulties they endured, Paul tells us that God had foreseen something better for us. He then urges us to “rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us and persevere in running the race that lies before us while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus”. Yes, we are all called to be saints. And, in our Gospel today, our Lord gives us three easily remembered principles. Easily remembered, but not always easily accomplished. The Second Sunday of Lent, the Sunday of the Paralytic Heb 1,10-14;2,1-3 Mark 2:1-12 At the start of our Epistle reading today, it speaks of “In the beginning”. That, of course, is talking about the beginning of God’s creation. However, there is another beginning in scripture, the beginning of human civilization. That beginning wasn’t with Adam and Eve, but with their sons, Cain and Abel. Cain was an agriculturist, and Abel raised livestock. They each brought an offering to God. Abel’s was accepted, but Cain’s was rejected. We’re not sure why, except that Cain did something wrong in presenting it. Apparently, pride was what caused Cain to do what he did next; he killed his brother. When God confronted him, Cain’s reaction was “Am I my brother’s keeper”. Obviously, the answer to Cain’s question is a resounding YES. Today’s Gospel shows 4 men acting as their brother’s keeper.
