Christ is Risen!!! In the Christian East, the greeting between believers during this, the Eastern Season, is just that, Christ is Risen, and the proper response is He is Risen indeed. The Second Sunday of Lent, the Sunday of the Paralytic Heb 1,10-14;2,1-3 Mark 2:1-12 At the start of our Epistle reading today, it speaks of “In the beginning”. That, of course, is talking about the beginning of God’s creation. However, there is another beginning in scripture, the beginning of human civilization. That beginning wasn’t with Adam and Eve, but with their sons, Cain and Abel. Cain was an agriculturist, and Abel raised livestock. They each brought an offering to God. Abel’s was accepted, but Cain’s was rejected. We’re not sure why, except that Cain did something wrong in presenting it. Apparently, pride was what caused Cain to do what he did next; he killed his brother. When God confronted him, Cain’s reaction was “Am I my brother’s keeper”. Obviously, the answer to Cain’s question is a resounding YES. Today’s Gospel shows 4 men acting as their brother’s keeper. The Fifth Sunday of Lent, St Mary of Egypt Heb 9:11-14 Mark 10:32-45 As Christians, we tend to focus on the New Testament, on Christ and the Apostles, on the Church. After all, Christ did away with the Law of Moses, correct? Well, no. Christ fulfilled the Law. The Law wasn’t done away with. The author of Hebrews says a little bit before today’s reading, “ When there is a change of priesthood, there is necessarily a change of law as well”. Through the prophet Jeremiah, God said, “Days are coming when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah…. I will place my law within them, and write it upon their hearts; I will be their God, and they shall be my people”. Remember the words of Jesus during the consecration? “This is my blood of the New Covenant”. Christ is high priest according to the Order of Melchizedek, the priesthood of that New Covenant.
